Is there a term of art for things that are endlessly appealing to smart people but fall down in practice? I would put Knuth's Literate Programming in this category.

What memoirs do the best at being unclouded by self-deception? Maybe ones written in extreme trial. Thinking for example of Ulysses Grant's Personal Memoirs and Speer's Inside the Third Reich.
