4/ we live in a world designed for cars. The last few decades are slowly bringing about a change in how we view cars. Bruce Apple yard gives a fabulous overview of the history and corrects many myths. I didnt know that the first ride was by a woman who believed in cars more than her inventor husband

1/ The tainted cup by Robert Jackson Bennett: Murder Mystery with neuro-divergent protagonists highlighting how systems of power seek to oppress people who are different. It's a nice mirror to the world we live in and a good follow up to his City of Stairs series

2/ The Bright Sword by Lev Grossman : It's an interesting interpretation of the Arthurian myth. What stands out to me is the lines of the epic are hidden well within the standard hero's journey and it doesnt shy away from the darker parts of the myth(incest, etc)

3/ The Fox Wife by Yangze Choo: This is a fantasy romance meets murder mystery novel. Set in early 1900's China, it's got a great set of characters and sets up the tropes well. Surprisingly easy to read.

4/ Pappyland by Wright Thompson: I am a huge fan of Wright Thompson's sport writing but this book goes deeper into how people live with legacies. It builds on his obsession with how sportspersons try to build a legacy and transfers that to the complex world of bourbon whisky

5 books I would recommend from my reading of 2024:
5/ The Kamogawa Food Detectives : Meals help freeze memories and moments. They also act as a bridge across generations and cultures. In this book, a father-daughter detective pair help people recover memories through recipes
