I wasn’t criticising its use on the cover: I was saying it is an interesting painting, historiographically, given what I was talking about in the thread.

Yes I know. What I meant there was the usual reconstruction of C5th ‘Goths’ on the basis of the material from the Balkans/Danubian areas. You and I both know that that stuff is unlikely to be diagnostically Gothic but it’s a reasonable stab at what Goths (and others from the region) might have…
