Gun Violence Prevention Illinois
@gvpillinois.bsky.social
Gun violence is a daily reality in America – but we’re fighting back by breaking the gun lobby’s hold on Illinois lawmakers.

G-PAC is building a political force to hold lawmakers accountable and continue the fight to keep our communities safe.
Illinois’ Safe At Home law takes effect today — requiring firearms to be secured so they’re not accessible to kids, at-risk individuals, or people prohibited from owning guns.

We helped pass this because secure storage saves lives.

Thirteen years ago, twenty children and six educators were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary.

Gun violence is still the leading cause of death for kids in America.

We owe them more than thoughts and prayers.
We owe them action.

Nekenya Hardy survived a shooting in 2004.

Today, he’s mediated over 1,000 conflicts as a violence interrupter on Chicago’s West Side—helping young men step away from street life and choose something better.

This is what community safety looks like.

First Trump slashed funding for violence prevention.

Now his ICE raids are stopping Safe Passage workers from protecting kids on their way to school.

This isn’t public safety. It’s political fear-mongering — and it’s putting lives at risk.

Year after year, domestic violence involving firearms continues to rise.

Women and children remain at risk from abusers who should never have access to a gun.

That’s why we fought to pass Karina’s Law—signed earlier this year to help close dangerous gaps in Illinois law.

The Trump admin is slashing funds for community violence prevention—and redirecting them to militarized immigration enforcement.

This reckless move ignores everything we know about what actually reduces gun violence.

We need prevention, not punishment.

A 14-year-old is dead and others injured after a downtown gathering turned deadly. We don’t yet know how the guns got there.

But we do know safely stored guns are less likely to end up in kids’ hands.

That’s why we helped pass Illinois’ Safe At Home law.

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance.

We remember the trans lives taken by violence—and recommit to building a future where they are safe, supported, and free.

This week also marks 3 years since the mass shooting at Club Q, a beloved LGBTQ+ space.

Whether they’re civilians or federal agents, the fact that public spaces now plan for people showing up with military-grade weapons should be a national warning sign.

This isn’t freedom. It’s fear. And it’s undermining what it means to be safe in public.

82% of Illinois’ licensed gun “manufacturers” didn’t make a single gun.

So why do they have licenses?

To buy in bulk, dodge oversight, and move guns across state lines.

It’s a loophole. And it’s putting lives at risk.

Thanks to @vpcinfo.bsky.social for exposing it.

Chicago is safer today because of years of hard, local work.

✅ Smart gun laws
✅ Community investment
✅ Coordinated law enforcement

It’s not because of political stunts or federal fearmongering.
This is a locally-led success story, and Illinois should be proud.

“Chicago is well positioned today to maintain the decline in violence — but there is nothing inevitable about it.”

– John Schmidt, former U.S. Associate Attorney General & G-PAC Board Member

That’s why we fight for stronger laws—and hold leaders accountable when they fall short.

Gun violence is down — in Chicago and beyond.

📉 Over the past 12 weeks, Chicago saw nearly 19 fewer shooting victims.
📉 East St. Louis, Decatur, and Rockford also saw declines.
📊 The trend: real, measurable progress.

This isn’t border enforcement. It’s militarization, under a familiar political playbook.

We are honored to present Gov. Gretchen Whitmer with the 2025 Profile in Courage Award.

As she reminded us: real progress takes persistence.

Michigan and Illinois are proving what’s possible when we elect gun safety champions and pass common-sense, life-saving laws.
