There's a basic tenet of geology called "The Principle of Original Horizontality" first discussed by Nicholas Steno that sediments are initially deposited in horizontal or nearly horizontal layers.

Geology is a very practical science.

Data from the MeerKAT radio telescope shows the some of the central portion of the plane of the Milky Way galaxy, with a graphic pullout highlighting a much smaller rectangular region at right, captured by the James Webb Space Telescope in near-infrared light. At the center of the MeerKAT image, a bright orange-white area is labeled Sagittarius A*. The MeerKAT and Webb images are labeled. The Webb image shows waves of pink and teal colors, with hundreds of thousands of stars. A compass graphic on the upper-left of the MeerKAT image shows north pointing toward the upper left corner and east pointing lower left. Each telescope image has a scale bar, about one sixth of the image, at lower right. Webb’s reads 6 light-years and MeerKAT’s reads 145 light-years. At lower left of the MeerKAT image is a spectral Index with color gradation from orange on the left, cyan in the middle, and blue on the right. Numbers on the spectral index read, from left to right, -1.8, -1, 0, 1.
