Absolutely. And then there comes a time when regarding your area/languages/cultures from multiple perspectives including structural power imbalances becomes an advantage! Been doing this for years, come on in, the water's fine!

Within academia there was also the need/pressure to justify the worthiness of one's interest in a small non-Russia country. That's what I recall anyway.
