Hm... looks like the remake remade the menus.
The original is jankey, but was heavily menu driven: the UI was a prototype for JRPGs. ( I think... published 1981, 5 years prior to dragonquest)

Hm... have you tried Wizardy 1 (dos/apple version)?
It pretty much inspired the combat mechanic of most JRPGS for a good 20 year period.
(Though the manual was kinda required)

Zazen is pretty intense, you got grit!

I find a minimal chant is effective, good for counting reps and saying mentally in certain situations. I use 'Namu Myōhō Renge Kyō'

With the standard mode, multiple lives handle this, & possible to avoid by playing slow

Enemies are procedural here for rares+ and can often warp, so can't learn most enemies.

A one turn 'introduction' stopping gameplay+show risks of enemy would solve this

The main issue is linear, repetitive, very long and samey gameplay that necessitates 'exterminate all enemies' on a level.

The skill trees+character building+combat is up there with top roguelikes, but the level design falls short.
