It's survival at this point!

Our tīpuna fought for justice for nigh on 150 years, so the majority of those generations saw little or no benefit - but never once gave up.

Then my generation took the results of all that hard work somewhat for granted, and then our government changed...

So we hope

One of the sources of hope is what's happening in parts of Africa.

Tech entrepreneurs dealing with much bigger barriers in real time (e.g. power cuts!, lack of funds) are innovating hard and figuring out how to do more with less, and keep the focus on community instead of profit at all costs.

If we take a path originating in Western paradigms, yes.

There are other ways to approach even the most wicked of problems.

Even now, with our future in the gravest danger it's been since the 1840s from our own government (not my take, someone wiser), I still have hope.

It may take time though.

I don't know - but am happy to place my trust in the people of Abundant Intelligences to tell me what needs to happen and how I can support.

I'm content to follow the lead of anyone who knows more if they are prioritising the environmental impact and focused on equity. The rest falls into place.

so how can I justify participating in the exploitation of natural resources in faraway communities that are also experiencing challenges with water?

That's one of so many e.g.s; I know some of the whānau think I'm anti-AI; I'm anti-content scraping, anti-progress for some destruction for others. ❣️

Agree. I think Karen Hao raises some good points; there's nothing inevitable about the current extractive exploitative way in which some operate these technologies, it's a choice.

I would love to play with the toys - but we are fighting for the quality of our drinking water across the archipelago

Absolutely, not my world but the people I do know in tech here in AoNZ are genuinely and ethically aiming for a better quality of life for people.

Currently saving up to pay an artist what their time is worth because the process matters to me as much as the final images. ☺️

100% - oh I wish the people making the decisions on what to prioritise using the tech for were Timnit Gebru and her ilk, or Abundant Intelligences instead of the ones who are.

More assistive tech for those with disabilities, more tech that does the dishes and mops the floors for our elders... ❣️

might ask them to because it was too hot, but only as a group.

Sorry for the novel!

Appreciate you and your posts, your version of 'keep kids safe' doesn't give me the ick like too many versions do.

My 5yo students knew the only person to take their kura jersey off was them, and that a kaiako

We discussed which body parts are tapu - lots of meanings, but think sacred, restricted.

Because that was the frame, it definitely wasn't just genitalia - armpits, nostrils, ears (yes for those who know, that haka was USEFUL!) anywhere that needed a reason eg an injury or health concern, for an

and I hope the parenting was better for the fierce negotiations between adults who wanted the best for the child ❣️

Interestingly, having worked adjacent to English-language sex ed for youth back in the day, many of the key concepts were easier to speak to through our language (Māori) and culture.

ensure the child knew about bodily autonomy and had the language to remain safe especially from nearest and dearest - but I chose not to expose them through that medium at that age.

Nothing but respect for the person - the child they were may have been safer if they'd seen their experience on film
