Turns out the real solution to the male loneliness epidemic is waiting for Godot

Some random elements of 'Cherokee' in no particular order:
• a precious kidnapped parrot
• a race to claim the estate of a French colonizer in Mexico
• Andre the Giant-style brute
• 2 washed-up PIs, one tall & thin & neurotic, the other short & fat & neurotic
• lazy French jazz lover
• femme fatale

I forgot that I'm allowed to be inspired by Jean Echenoz in writing my novel, even though he writes in French. This changes everything.

Incidentally, I really think his book 'Cherokee' is begging for an English-language PTA/Coen-style adaptation.

Hmm maybe I'll work this into my novel. It would also be a Jean Echenoz riff, since iirc the cult that sinister cousin Fred takes over is called the "Ray-Worshippers of the Third Rank" or something like that, and they worship the color white.

Instead of making silly AI stuff our spiritual-political battleground du jour, I propose instead that we bring back Sun-oriented civic religion in the Egyptian or Inca vein. Solar panel instillation is worship. It is abomination for a tyrant to deny the Sun's gifts; hubris to stare at the eclipse.

the fact that there's an energy source responsible for life on earth that will just keep stably emitting tons of energy for another five billion years and that the most powerful country in the world has an administration that wants to wholly reject harnessing it is crazy

Literally, unironically, yes. They are deeply insecure about the parts of Catholicism that appeal to virtues ideologically coded as "feminine" to them (care, sacrifice, charity, poise, etc).

I imagine this going the way of the 'I Touch Myself' dance number from the first Austin Powers, with the fembots/fascists experiencing explosive model collapse.

Ludovico Treatment for Hegseth & Miller, except it's just an infinitely looping supercut of all and only the Sean Penn scenes from ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER.

In the grand tradition of human art, Paul Thomas Anderson's INHERENT VICE and ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER provide a compelling, aspirational, and—in my experience—totally, tragically false answer to the eternal question:

Can a stoner achieve Minimal Bushido?

nvm this is my masterpiece
It's a black pen drawing of a French modal logic sadboy lost in logical space. There's a bird holding or pecking at an apple in nearby visual space.

my proudest work i think
A drawing I made in pen and marker titled "poissons images du Sauveur". It's colorful and fishlike.

How could something so out of character happen to me

Genki textbook
Fifty Sounds
The Jakarta Method
The Dawn of Everything
The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows
This Is Water
Archipelago of the Sun

This used to be a rather unusual and bizarre form of art. But no longer!
haikugoat.bsky.social
I once went on a guided tour of a dead art collector's house that had a number of hyperrealistic life-sized statues standing in various rooms. Several times, I mistook them for especially stoic or dazed fellow visitors. I reflexively engaged with them as if they weren't intentionally crafted.
haikugoat.bsky.social
Hmm, I'll have to think more about this (I'm v tired and unwell!). But my hunch is that drawings DO use a "different channel" (TBD what we mean by that). Their stylization (the ways they differ from photorealism) make it clear that they're intentional+constructed visual signs, like gestures.
haikugoat.bsky.social
For sure. But why is it so hard in the bus case?!?! Buses regularly play announcements like "please exit through the rear doors" but people just don't do it. Why?
haikugoat.bsky.social
How do *you* feel about drawings?
haikugoat.bsky.social
My point was just that talking isn't really the right thing to compare it too, cause talking is innately perceived as constructive rather than directly representational, whereas film is (defeasibly) biased towards being seen as representational because of its relationship to visual perception.
haikugoat.bsky.social
I also don't think these folk reflexes are set in stone. I think the overwhelming CGI-ness of "live action" action films has acclimated people to the constructedness of film, & AI will accelerate this shift. But the shift will be swimming upstream against a folk epistemology of "recording".
haikugoat.bsky.social
I think most people do not think of drawings as transparent replicas of reality because they're stylized. Photos, however, they do. And films too. I don't think that about either, but I'm not most people (e.g. I was a film studies major before cog sci & am very attuned to the artificiality of film).
haikugoat.bsky.social
I kinda disagree? We all have built-in awareness that talking is about narrative and persona construction. We are pretty used to thinking of vision/sound as transparently reflecting reality.
