To: Sen. Duckworth APR 5 2025 8:50AM I am extremely disappointed that you don't back Bernie Sanders resolutions to block the sale of $8.8 billion in weapons to Israel. Israel has maintained a total humanitarian aid blockade on Gaza for over a month. It is against both international and domestic law to continue sending Israel weapons — especially after Israel unilaterally ended the ceasefire agreement last month while blocking all aid, food, medicine, and otherwise from entering Gaza. It's been over a month and counting with absolutely no humanitarian aid getting into Gaza. Nothing. No food, no water, no medicine, no fuel, for over a month. That is a clear violation of the Geneva Conventions, the Foreign Assistance Act, and basic human decency. It is a war crime. You don't starve children. All of this is unconscionable. We are talking about a mass atrocity. And what makes it even worse is that we, as Americans, are deeply complicit in all that is happening in Gaza. We're witnessing a U.S.-funded genocide, paid for by the billions with our tax dollars. U.S. military funding for Israel's war crimes is not in the interests of the American people and yet YOU voted to continue aiding and abetting human rights violations of the Palestinian people. If any other country in the world was using American bombs to kill thousands of innocent people - including the greatest loss of life among journalists in history, and the greatest loss of life among U.N. workers since the organization was established - U.S. Senators would be lining up to block such weapons transfers. Continued unfettered arms sales to Israel enables gross human rights violations and will keep Israel from coming back to the negotiating table after a broken ceasefire. ICE agents unlawfully arrested and detained Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist and recent graduate of Columbia University. Right now, he is at high risk of deportation. Mahmoud is a lawful permanent resident. He was exercising his right to peacefully protest. He has not been charged with a crime. Mahmoud was targeted for his role in student protests at Columbia last year, and his arrest comes on the heels of the State Department’s announcement that it plans to revoke the visas or green cards and deport students affiliated with pro-Palestine protests. ICE is holding him in a notoriously cruel detention facility in Louisiana and informed him that they have "revoked" his green card. No one should be ripped away from their family and sent to detention for exercising their right to peacefully protest — and no one should be deported for speaking out for human rights.

I’ve been reading a high school history textbook for the last several months and as it turns out this is the section I’m on now.
America Seeks Benefits Without Burdens The United States, having rejected the Treaty Versailles, was still technically at war with Germany, Austria, and Hungary nearly three years after the armistice. Peace was finally achieved in July 1921 when the war officially ended. Congress passed a simple joint resolution that declared Isolation was enthroned in Washington. Harding Isolation was enthroned in Washington. Harding regarded the League of Nations as a thing unclean, though he reluctantly dispatched "unofficial observers" to its seat in Geneva, Switzerland, to hang around like detectives shadowing a suspected criminal. Disarmament was one international issue on which Harding, after much indecision, finally seized the initiative. He was prodded by businesspeople unwilling to dig deeper into their pockets for money to finance the ambitious naval building program started during the war. On December 27, 2024, the Israeli military arbitrarily detained Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a pediatrician and the director of Kamal Adwan hospital in the North Gaza governorate, along with other hospital staff and patients receiving treatment. The raid, the latest in a series of attacks on healthcare facilities in North Gaza, put Kamal Adwan, the last remaining major hospital in the area, out of service. Earlier, in October 2024, Israeli forces raided the hospital and detained medical staff and patients. On December 12, 2023, Israeli forces had raided the same hospital, also arresting staff and patients. While that raid put the hospital out of service, it was thanks to the efforts and dedication of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya and his colleagues that the hospital managed to re-open and resume its work. From January to September 2024, the hospital received the wounded from across North of Wadi Gaza, including Gaza City, who could not seek medical attention elsewhere due to the establishment by the Israeli army of the so-called Netzarim Corridor that has split the Gaza Strip down the middle. Its staff treated those wounded in attacks on starving people queuing for flour and aid, known by Palestinians as the "flour massacres" as well as those wounded in other strikes and shelling. Throughout that period, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya and his colleagues provided human rights and humanitarian organizations with reliable information about the health situation. Since October 2024, Israeli forces have been waging a devastating and concentrated offensive on the North Gaza Governorate, placing the whole area under near-total siege, cutting it off from Gaza City, killing and injuring thousands of civilians, and forcibly displacing most of the area's remaining inhabitants. During those months and until the December 27 raid, Kamal Adwan hospital was effectively the last lifeline for those who remained in North Gaza governorate, estimated at just 75,000. Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya was their voice.

As Washington knew, Israel’s military in 1967 was far superior to the militaries of all the Arab states combined, as it was in every other contest between them. Government documents published since then have confirmed these judgments. US military and intelligence sources predicted a crushing victory by Israel in any and all circumstances, given the mastery enjoyed by its armed forces. Five years after the 1967 war, five Israeli generals echoed the US assessment, stating in different venues that Israel was not imperiled by annihilation. On the contrary: its forces were much stronger than the Arab armies in 1967, and the country was never in any danger of losing a war, even if the Arabs had struck first. Yet the myth prevails: in 1967, a tiny, vulnerable country faced constant, existential peril, and it continues to do so. This fiction has served to justify blanket support of Israeli policies, no matter how extreme, and despite its repeated rebuttal even by authoritative Israeli voices.

In this first decade of the twentieth century, a large proportion of the Jews living in Palestine were still culturally quite similar to and lived reasonably comfortably alongside city-dwelling Muslims and Christians. They were mostly ultra-Orthodox and non-Zionist, mizrahi (eastern) or Sephardic (descendants of Jews expelled from Spain), urbanites of Middle Eastern or Mediterranean origin who often spoke Arabic or Turkish, even if only as a second or third language. In spite of marked religious distinctions between them and their neighbors, they were not foreigners, nor were they Europeans or settlers: they were, saw themselves, and were seen as Jews who were part of the indigenous Muslim-majority society.

Such radical social engineering at the expense of the indigenous population is the way of all colonial settler movements. In Palestine, it was a necessary precondition for transforming most of an overwhelmingly Arab country into a predominantly Jewish state. As this book will argue, the modern history of Palestine can best be understood in these terms: as a colonial war waged against the indigenous population, by a variety of parties, to force them to relinquish their homeland to another people against their will.

Herzl, the acknowledged leader of the growing movement he had founded, had paid his sole visit to Palestine in 1898, timing it to coincide with that of the German kaiser Wilhelm II. He had already begun to give thought to some of the issues involved in the colonization of Palestine, writing in his diary in 1895: We must expropriate gently the private property on the estates assigned to us. We shall try to spirit the penniless population across the border by procuring employment for it in the transit countries, while denying it employment in our own country. The property owners will come over to our side. Both the process of expropriation and the removal of the poor must be carried out discreetly and circumspectly?
