Took the plunge with some manga on Comic Walker, Bookwalker, news on NHK Easy and played Pokemon Y and never looked back.

Definitely give it a go. The new hd-2d remakes have an option to use furigana. Plus, there's voice acting on the main story beats.

They also show you where you need to go next in case you are lost compared to the older versions.

Pokemon and Dragon Quest were the first games I played in Japanese. The newer games have furigana so that might help you out.

Pokemon yellow is in kana so that's a great start.

The Detective Conan manga and novels all have furigana as well.
