Mint Garnet is very aesthetically oriented and micromanagy, making everyone present themselves “perfectly” so her Pearl (being made for Mint) is similar, but also recognizes how controlling Mint is, and wants to find a way to help the other low ranking gems not be shattered over appearances.

I’m thinking the colony is pretty vain/elitist and uses gem labor to make their lives/structures more luxurious. The Peridot designs elegant looking pieces of tech for the elites when they want to flex their status and the Lapis would likely put on waterworks shows for the elites when they meet.
