Anonymously reviewing San Diego area eateries in search of the best #burrito in the county.
The initial Top 10 power ranked bean rice and cheese #burritos are in. Now it's time to go find more. The next batch will have special emphasis on #taco shops south of I-8 to rectify the current lack of geographic representation. Stay tuned. #sandiego #Mexicanfood #restaurants #food

1. Raymundo’s (La Jolla) $7.50 – Hands down, the best of this current batch. Inexpensive, hefty (that’s a good thing), and high-quality. The beans taste like they come from an old-school Mexican restaurant that has been making them right for years. 🌯🌯🌯 #burrito #sandiego #Mexicanfood #restaurants

2. Señor Taquero (Sabre Springs) $6.99 – Highest score in terms of price and heft (I realize I need to count the weight of a burrito in the scoring. A burrito should put you in a burrito coma an hour or so after eating. That speaks to value for the money.)

3. Cotixan (multiple locations) $7.65 – Tasty. Good heft. Would have been tied with #2 but the tortilla kind of fell apart and structural integrity is important. It’s also more expensive than Señor Taquero. Hey, 66 cents is 66 cents.

4. Salsa (Poway) $7.50 – I will forever have a soft spot in my heart for Salsa. Great burrito, correct price. It loses a few points for inadequate heft. Every time I have a BRC from there, I stay awake the rest of the day. It should be bigger.

The Top 5:

5. Roberto’s (multiple locations) $8.10 – El rey de San Diego taco shops, Roberto’s BRC is perfectly fine, of moderate heft, and has lovely salsa. Neither stupendous or horrendous.

Top 5 coming up next, but so you know, these are power rankings and not a top 10 list. It will take a very long time to try *every* BRC #burrito in San Diego (but I have time). As new taco shops are reviewed, the running list will be revised, with the stock of joints being raised or lowered.

6. Yesenia’s (Carmel Mountain Ranch) $9.48 – This taco shop has a cult following. I can see why. Its beans are the perfect texture, not as flavorful as some others, but enough so that you don’t need as much hot sauce to make it worth your while, but... #SanDiego #MexicanFood #Burritos

7. Lourdes (Escondido) $9.78 – Perfectly fine competent #burrito, like the kind your friend’s mom would make for you at their house when you were a kid. Extra points for the salsa. Like a lot of other places, they seem to overcharge a bit for adding rice. #MexicanFood #sandiego

8. El Indio (Mission Hills) $7.56 – This place is such an institution. I wanted to love it. But I didn’t. The beans had a weird tang. The rest of the elements are boring. At least the burrito is priced right. #burritos #sandiego #MexicanFood

9. Porkyland (multiple locations) $13.20 – This really is the best BRC in San Diego entirely because of two factors: The tortillas are about the most flavorful you’ll find anywhere, and the smoked salsa makes any sort of meat filling unnecessary for added taste. All that said... #burritos #sandiego

...here are initial power rankings. A few footnotes to come after. From last to first:
10. Rigoberto’s (multiple locations) $11.00 – Hands also down, the worst in this initial batch. I’d say the taste is average were it not for the fact that...

I’ll be rating all restaurants on their bean rice and cheese burrito, a mainstay that any joint worth its salt should be able to make well and not charge too much for. It levels the playing field as well. In later rounds, I’ll get to specialty burritos. But for now…

The rules are
- no national or regional chain fast-food restaurants (Taco Bell, Del Taco, Green Burrito, etc.) will be reviewed
- no sit-down restaurants (counter service or drive-through only)
- Criteria are simply taste and price

Now then...
