I love Alan Moore’s contention that this is the successor ship to Pancake XL4, which was in turn the successor to Shrapnel XL3 and Mushroom Cloud XL2 because each ship is named after what happened to its predecessor. :)

It’s like the Suspiria score crossed with Tubular Bells.

I was really surprised by how much I liked the fifth one.

Can’t decide what to buy on Prime Day?

Try: absolutely nothing, and then go support indie bookstores instead 📚

Hey y'all - sharing again as I'm really proud of the work I'm doing here & just trying to promote my writing however I can. I'm pretty good at promoting everything else but myself these days. All subs are appreciated but the paid subs will help me keep this going (plus we have a big vet visit soon).

It’s also a big influence on Romero.

There’s really no higher compliment than listening to an episode as soon as it’s posted. So glad you liked it!

You’d think this would come after “Diagnosis: Murder”, but….
halfpricehorror.bsky.social
Ooh! Looking forward to it--I'm still catching up, I just finished your Indiana Jones series, but that only means I've got this one to get hyped for! (Along with the whole Romero series and the Cornetto trilogy, and....)

Honestly, it made _more_ sense when he was saying it about Minneapolis. At least there was some civil unrest at the time. Portland is in the middle of celebrating its Homemade Jams and Jellies Festival or some shit.
halfpricehorror.bsky.social
I like this one better than Galaxy Invader, tbh; it doesn’t have anyone as unpleasant to watch as the dad in that movie, which gives the whole thing an oddly sweet tone. Even the Mayor is kind of fun.
halfpricehorror.bsky.social
I love this movie! It’s such a DIY indie gem, and it really punches above its weight. It’s amateurish, yes, but charmingly so.
halfpricehorror.bsky.social
After watching ‘Them!’ and realizing just how much it influenced ‘Aliens’, I really want @eyeoftheduckpod.com to do a 50s sci-fi horror series that hits all the secret Rosetta Stones of genre cinema, like Forbidden Planet and The Blob and The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms.
halfpricehorror.bsky.social
I know Mark knows this, but it was. Lucas wrote the original trilogy about Nixon and the prequel trilogy about Bush II, and the sequel trilogy’s biggest problem is that it wouldn’t commit to being about Trump.

Who could ever have imagined when I played a fictional rebel who joined the Resistance to oppose a criminal Authoritarian & wannabe King, it would be happening in real-life?

Yeah. Looking at Whedon’s work now is like looking one of those hanging object sculptures. It all seems really random until you stand at the “he was a fake feminist who pretended to elevate women for clout” angle, and then it all lines up perfectly.
halfpricehorror.bsky.social
I remember feeling like it was absolutely editorial fiat in a season where everyone was being jerked around by the demands of the plot, but in hindsight it was absolutely Whedon’s misogyny leaking through. I am so embarrassed by how much benefit of the doubt I gave him.
halfpricehorror.bsky.social
And props to Duane Jones, who was an uncredited screenwriter on the movie and whose contributions cannot be overstated, for shaping this subtext into the story. He was thinking about this stuff when nobody else on set was.

Anyway props to NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD for just flat saying "in times of crisis your supposed protectors reveal themselves as the racist lynch mobs they always were" 57 years ago
