... And the latency/ASIO issues makes me think it might be folks without the proper cable (I'll give it a test on my PC with my audio interface at some point and see what it's like without the cable)

I took a punt and paid for a month subscription. First impressions, it's pretty good. Decent amount of songs, some are covers but plenty of original songs on there. I get the feeling the negative reviews are more about the move to subscription from just being able to pay one off for content...

Just had a quick blast of Rocksmith+ performance wise no issues for me. Free songs are a bit crap though

Not tried Rocksmith+ the subscription model put me off to be honest. I noticed on Steam it's saying there's a free trial of sorts so might see what it's like. Latency was borderline unplayable on the original Xbox version but pretty much unnoticeable on my laptop with 2014

All just works for me. Using built-in Realtek sound card on my laptop. I did have the Asio4all driver installed from messing around with Ableton but I've not had to do any config specifically for Rocksmith

You need the Rocksmith tone cable and then any guitar/bass. I had the cable already as I had the original Rocksmith on the Xbox. I'm not sure it's worth buying 2014 now though as apparently since it's been relisted all/most of the original songs are missing due to licensing...
