Satoshi: "I think it would be possible for BitDNS to be a completely separate network and separate block chain, yet share CPU power with Bitcoin. The only overlap is to make it so miners can search for proof-of-work for both networks simultaneously."

Different protocols, different purposes.

HNS domains can serve as DIDs, logins, wallets, websites, and more. The top 100k Alexa names were reserved for their rightful owners, and all ICANN TLDs are reserved. The remaining TLDs were opened to humanity through an on-chain auction mechanism. I can’t think of a fairer distribution system.

The auction system did help reduce squatting at scale. Since bids lock up funds for 7–14 days and there is a limited supply of HNS coins, even whales had to pick their spots instead of just scooping everything. Without that friction, we’d likely have seen far more mass squatting from the start.

Same goes for .com's or any other extension or naming system.

You can still find great bargains at:

shakestation.io

namebase.io

These options are definitely cheaper than trying to acquire an ICANN TLD.

You can also discover TLDs that are about to expire here:

I think you’ll need to be the one to build it. It’s probably just a small change in the code to add HNS support, since it works the same way as DNS. DM me if you’d like me to send you the contacts of the devs from the deprecated Stem Socials HNS Bluesky server.

HNS briefly worked on BSKY. I’m not sure why they stopped, since I saw it as a beautiful solution that was also compatible with legacy domains.

There was also an attempt at a PDS called Stems Social by @brown.bsky.social and @rithvik.bsky.social , but that was discontinued as well.
