New blog. There’s a new series of Callan - and a new Hunter. So what will Callan make of him, and can we trust a Soviet defector?

I take a look at the first episode of series 2 of Callan: Red Knight, White Knight.

Do you even care about your jumps, Lambert? DO YOU?!

Even with public transport, it’s not likely to start running later. I live in an area where the last bus home has been 8pm before. In other places, the last train or bus has usually been around or before midnight at best.

People used to the bus or train aren’t going to start shelling out on taxis.

Yeah, hard to tell on those. My dad is similarly a bit of a hoarder (my mother is the opposite, actively discouraging!) and while I don’t think he or my grandfather particularly sparked my interest in history, I can look back to my childhood and teenage years now and see how they encouraged it.

The pistol belonged to my great-grandfather, but I’ve no idea where the shotguns came in. The family had a shop and I once supposed it was protection.

He was a quiet gentle man, but had an interest in history and held on to many things - it was very easy to see where I got those traits from! 😁

I was so impressed! My cousin wanted to take the pistol to school for show and tell! 🤣

My dad took care of their disposal… Before he did, we had an ex-forces family friend come round who took a look at the pistol for us. It was loaded. He made sure it was safe.

Blimey that is bonkers… My grandfather had Parkinson’s, although his dementia side didn’t appear until very late on. Aware his general health was worsening, he kept making trips into the loft (!) and presented us with various family heirlooms, including a WW1 police pistol and 2 ancient shotguns.

English and History graduate here who now works in digital marketing. If you want useful websites that provide genuine, relevant value and that people can understand, you absolutely cannot rely on AI. You need people who can research, analyse and write for specific contexts and audiences.

Just to be clear, an English degree - learning to critically assess texts - is actually one of the most dangerous for people such as Badenoch.

An educated population, able to bring hundreds of years of context to statements in a dawning age of AI slop and attention-seeking dishonesty is also vital.

So, the plan is to cut English, the arts, and sociology - the degrees that actually study culture - while on another part of your platform claiming to “defend” British culture.

It’s performance nationalism with a reading age of seven.

The performing arts, sociology and anthropology are among the subjects the Conservatives would like to cut

For a while I thought I might manage this one day, but my mother has similarly never been an early person. She’s now been retired several years and enjoys sleeping until 8.30-9 most days.

I didn’t know about it! Think I’m rather out the loop since leaving Twitter regularly.

I am still keen to do a London crawl with Double Diamond - I mentioned it to @huskyteer.co.uk between cocktails last weekend, who is possibly up for it too.

We had a nice chat and I got some gentle form tips. My gym seems to have become more friendly, which is lovely yet also weird for me…

It’s my solo time, I’ve never had gym buddies and I’ve never spoken to people at the gym. Feel increasingly confident trying new things and asking for help though.

Sensed someone watching me at the gym as I was lifting dumbbells. I do a superset (different exercises back-to-back) and when I was done I looked away from the mirror to see the bloke next to me open-mouthed.

“You. Are. A. Machine!”

Honestly the best confidence boost I’ve ever had at the gym! 😁

I’ve got a quiet social month coming up, but it’s also the time when the shortening days and general grimness of looming winter starts to gnaw at my general disposition.

Chatted to a local friend last night, who has helpfully encouraged me to join 2 budget-friendly evenings out this week.

It’s nice and low-effort. Often ends up on as the last thing before bed when I’m channel hopping but not really up for committing to anything entirely. Useful for a preview of new shows and it benefits from you tuning in to more episodes as you get to know the different contributors.

I was a latecomer to Stranger Things but have watched the first 3 seasons over the last year. Interestingly, you’re the second person who’s recently told me they got bored early on. I was certainly less gripped initially but intrigued enough to stick with it and get to a more bingeable point.

I only started watching odd episodes of Gogglebox in the last couple of years, but it’s often been useful for me to go, “Yep, definitely don’t need to check out that show.”

I’ve been presuming that I Kissed a Girl/Boy are the low-budget homosexual equivalent.

Strictly’s cultural ubiquity means I kind of know how it works, but only saw Brucie presenting the end when it used to be on before Doctor Who.

For ages I assumed Love Island was this tiny barely watched thing on ITV2, but then had a couple of jobs where I was the only person not watching it.
hannahcooper.bsky.social
Line of Duty. I’ve seen the first episode twice but never found time for the rest.

Also Love Island and (probably the biggest) Strictly Come Dancing. Neither are my sort of thing.
hannahfearn.bsky.social
Inspired by a post I just saw in which someone admitted they hadn’t seen a single episode of Friends nor the film Love Actually… what cultural hole do you have that’s a bit weird for your generation?

I’ll go first: I haven’t seen Dirty Dancing.
