Constantly travelling and eating out
TWO ELEMENTS! in my head at some of it, so I really think they could improve by stripping some of the courses down a bit. The food was Asian enough to be difficult to pair with wine, so maybe just getting a good bottle of riesling would have been best. The service was attentive and unobtrusive.

ice cream on top, mini chocolate fondants with a centre of gochujang caramel, layered jelly with woodruff sugar). The food sometimes came across as a little fussy with too many elements (did they really need the pear with the otherwise lovely water deer course?), and I heard Syd and Carmy shout

best of all (even though she has of course had better scallops in Norway). Special mention also to the brilliant potato sourdough bread with cultured butter and to all the desserts (salty custard with sweet rhubarb marmalade at the bottom, a very citrusy trifle affair with rose granita and yoghurt

for the guests (three pre-snacks including oysters, a very delicious bread course, two extra desserts). The food is Thai- and Japanese-inspired, mostly seafood but also a single meat course. Everything was very good, #therestaurant-utan perhaps liked the scallops with dashi-butter and bergamot sauce

toast with black caviar and truffle. Scallops in a glorious miso cream sauce. Matcha Basque cheesecake beautifully paired with Rivesaltes from 1968. #therestaurant-utan didn't have the rest of the proposed wine pairings, but they sounded good, but a bottle of champagne also worked with everything.

#restaurangutangen must admit that this too was excellent. And chocolate chai was surprisingly good too. And service is invariably excellent. www.permitroom.co.uk/locations/ox...

And the next day they had their traditional breakfast at Dishoom Permit Room – the #restaurant-utan is incapable of ordering anything other than the glorious bacon naan and house chai, but the daughter had the chicken keema pau, a fried egg on top of spicy chopped chicken served with soft bread.

The next day they had to try Vaults and Garden in their new venue, and it's still an excellent place to have lunch – they had chicken Penang and mediterranean beef stew plus shared a giant piece of chocolate fudge cake, all to the usual solid standard. And they had good taste in Christmas music.

For dessert they had excellent and obviously homemade mint choc chip ice cream and perfect sticky toffee pudding. The service is always a little slow, but it's worth it. (And we always live in hope of the legendary harissa chicken appearing on the menu.) www.magdalenarms.co.uk #oxfordrestaurants
