There was a flurry of helicopter activity this afternoon going from Waiheke to Auckland. Maybe he ended his holiday here early.

It would be hard to find a bad food place on Waiheke. Recommended: Cappadocia Turkish, Two Fat Buns, La Dolce Vita, Red Crab Thai, 372, Bisou breakfast

It's also endearing he still has faith in AI and AGI viability, future success and takeup.

My installation is paid off, I haven't paid a power bill for ages and now you want me to pay extra taxes to subsidise nuclear power generation because it is always uncompetitive in a free market? (www.iisd.org/story/the-un...) You libertarians are strange.

A minimal outlay for a massive profit stream.

Why would I pay through the nose for nuclear power when I get free power off my roof? Or are you suggesting solar panels and wind mills should be banned and the nuclear industry be massively subsidised to keep power prices competitive? Good luck with that.

All new housing development consents should come with mandatory solar installation too.

This will become a bigger issue in the future if all those NZers who moved abroad for better careers and incomes want to retire in NZ but still qualify for NZ super. I guess NZ counts on foreign countries to finance its pensioners. Will that voting bloc tolerate this?
January 2, 2026 at 4:10 AM
Afaik, that law was brought in my the Savage government before WW2. Even Winston Peters has not managed to change the law - imagine his ratings if he did! - because it would make the NZ pension even more unaffordable for the government, even if with NZ super as low as it is.
January 2, 2026 at 4:07 AM
You do get double pensions in any other country if you qualify for them. NZ is an outlier cheapskate country counting on its citizens to earn so much abroad they don't need NZ super.
January 2, 2026 at 4:05 AM
NZ confiscating foreign pensions up to the level of NZ super is basically theft. No other country does this (and none stops paying pensions when you move abroad either. Disclosure: I get a tiny amount from abroad - for which I have paid social security. A deeply unfair system.
