As a CSE student in the mid 80's, one required courses for all the Engineering students was "Careers in Engineering", which was a 1.25 hour class once a week. All Engineers were required to take it, so there were a lot of students in the class each semester, so we met in the 600 seat auditorium.

First come, first serve, if you got there late you could sit on the stairs. We had AMAZING speakers! One week, Jim Lovell came to speak. A nerd speaking to nerds, and he was in his element. If you have ever seen the movie "Apollo 13", ramp up the tension and suspense 100x.

He told us things about that mission that are probably still not known very well. He talked, and he talked, and we asked questions, and he talked, and he kept 623 Engineering students ON THE EDGE OF THEIR SEATS! We could NOT get enough. We were all children at the time of Apollo 13.
