New paper out! ❄️ Coastal Victoria Land, Antarctica, is a region of extremes—from the polar desert of the McMurdo Dry Valleys, to areas with much more snowfall nearby. We studied where the moisture for this snowfall comes from—and the weather patterns that drive it! 🌍 💨 (1/5)

The amount of water in the atmosphere hit a record high in 2024 with 4.9% above the 1991–2020 average. This trend heightens the potential for extreme rainfall events. Explore the Global Climate Highlights 2024 report: bit.ly/40kQpcz

Last week we had the last CHESS winter school, with the topic "H2O" - a perfect theme to take a scientific journey, connecting across the components of the Earth system with engaged PhD students and lecturers in a cosy cabin in the Norwegian mountains. geofysikk.org/2024/12/18/h...

Yes, the weather forecasts by AI are impressive, in particular in terms of their computational efficiency. But they still require all the current observations from ground to space for their initial conditions, and data from excellent physics-based models for training.

Satellite measurements of stable water isotopes are highly useful, but not easy to validate. In our recent paper, we use an isotope-enabled regional model in an innovative way to bridge the scale gap between airborne and satellite measurements, enabling comparison on a wider basis.

Our recently published study from the Iceland-Greenland Seas cruise in 2018 shows that the strong evaporation in the winter time in this region can over time induce a signal in the water isotope composition of the ocean mixed-layer.

A successful launch for the #EarthCARE satellite!

First conceived 30 years ago at University of Reading, it will gather vital information about clouds & aerosols which will help us improve weather forecasts & climate models.

Well done everyone involved!

Finally, the #CESAR campaign is going to start soon. @ncarucar.bsky.social's research aircraft C-130 is now on its way to Kiruna, Sweden, packed with scientific instrumentation to study Arctic clouds - including our own #ISLAS_project cold trap to collect water vapour for stable isotope analysis!

Our 2nd semester students in #VærHavKlima at U. Bergen built each their own little weather stations. Exciting how easy it is these days to build cool 'things' from scratch with some soldering and 3D-printing. An incredibly motivating experience for incoming students! t.co/r63K0d3PU9
