Distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) offer a non-invasive, passive (especially valuable for patients who may be too unwell for detailed behavioral testing) window, but standing waves from sounds bouncing around in the ear canal throw off measurements at these higher frequencies.👂

Assays of inner-ear health in the extended high-frequency (>8 kHz) range are critical for early detection of hearing loss from ototoxic medications—like common chemotherapeutics for cancer and certain antibiotics needed for children with cystic fibrosis. 🏥
