Think it comes a hatred of the perceived misuse/obfuscation of the "true youth" by the young. A sort of anti-clericalism applied to youth culture rather than religion.
Of course the reality is likely closer to just being wrong about there being a "real youth" at all and reacting badly to that.

Necroing, which I assume is bad manners here as well, but iirc Stephenson explore something similar to this a bit in "Fall, Or Dodge In Hell" - I don't know if you've read it (more recent, and imo not all that great other than the moderation stuff, which is interesting).
