Always a great conversation with Jeff. We bounced around on some Sixers preseason talk, and discussed some early impressions with this team.

I’ve mentioned this before, but a Maxey/VJ/Grimes lineup works on both ends. The same goes if you replace Maxey with McCain. It’s only when Maxey and McCain share the floor that things get tricky.

Nick Nurse said starting a three-guard lineup “is certainly on the table.”

This is why I love basketball.

Adem Bona posted this extended cut of his brothers seeing him play basketball in person for the first time in years. Basketball creates some powerful, beautiful moments.

He did not but he drew the foul

VJ Edgecombe is a mad man for trying this

Kennedy Chandler and Malcolm Hill logging minutes over Hunter Sallis…

Still a limited sample, but these two VJ Edgecombe games reaffirm what he’ll need to reach his ceiling:

– Refine the handle
– Hit 3s consistently
– Master change of pace

The last two come in offseason work. If he masters two (or all), watch out.

Dominick Barlow, like Nurse said, was the stand-out two-way guy. Rebounded well, and did some other stuff on the offensive end — particularly cutting and moving the ball.
harrisongrimm.bsky.social
Kelly Oubre was fantastic on defense for this game. I think he’ll benefit from having real NBA talent next to him this year.

Pretty good debut for VJ Edgecombe (14/6/3). Was very aggressive in the paint, got to the line a bunch. Thought he did really well on defense, and was a pretty good complimentary playmaker next to Maxey. He struggled with efficiency, but so did the entire Sixers’ O.

Tyrese Maxey looked really good, and the box score watchers won’t see that. Thought he made good reads, and had a good shot diet. I was particularly happy to see him using his floater again, which he somewhat abandoned last year. Good stuff!

Some interesting (way too early) takeaways from 2 and a half-ish quarters of preseason basketball. I’ll thread some below:

VJ Edgecombe with the high-arcing 3 with a defender in his face 👀

The good:
- VJ is doing pretty much everything well but scoring right now. Very active on defense + on the boards
- Maxey looks like Maxey
- Plenty of good Bona setups via lobs
- Oubre doing a ton on defense

The bad:
- The NBA broadcast is laughably bad

NBA start times being off by 10-15 minutes?

We’re so back.

Quentin Grimes’ qualifying offer (and his remaining leverage) expire tonight at 11:59 PM EST. Expect some type of update today.
harrisongrimm.bsky.social
It looks like Jared McCain underwent his procedure today. If Shams’ reported 4–6 week timeline is accurate, that would place his potential return between October 28 and November 11, assuming no setbacks.
harrisongrimm.bsky.social
It’ll ultimately be a ‘wait and see’ type of thing with Embiid this year, but the early results seem promising so far.
paulhudrick.bsky.social
Nick Nurse said Joel Embiid did participate in live practice today. Nurse said he didn’t do everything, but he did a lot. Said Embiid was playing and running hard and looked good.
harrisongrimm.bsky.social
Yeah, I’m not sure I agree on that one. Most of the projections I use with this stuff have him around $12M-$17M in value
harrisongrimm.bsky.social
Listen, man. You can’t still be a restricted free agent in late September asking for $25M a year and expect the Sixers to just say ‘sure.’

If you’re genuinely upset they declined that, that’s just not knowing your market or reading the situation.
harrisongrimm.bsky.social
He’ll get opportunities once he’s back. Seems like the Sixers really want to find out how real last season was.
