This is one of those cases where I think VR is actually a really great tool for artists to get a feel for the size and operation of a weapon they're drawing. Hotdogs, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades matches the real controls and features quite closely and has an absurd variety of toys

He's based on cestus fighters, with a helmet and skirt added for the cool factor. They designed this guy back in 2015, before DD1 even released

The Ludus Magnus faction in Arena Rex are pretty much all drawn from historical gladiators, so it's not surprising that similar armor and designs have cropped up. I've actually talked to them about their concept to production process, I seriously doubt there's anything shady on their end
