My book of dirty stories is full of math, ghosts, chess and country music. It is sweet and kind and just a bit bewildering. The Girl who Couldn't Come is back in print after almost ten years, and it is perfect for reading out loud to someone who feels too far away.

Sitting inside all day, I forget the rain and the wind, let alone the feeling of a toad hopping around inside my cupped hands. I want to write and create something that is beautiful or touching. I want to express those parts of myself and so I stay inside a lot.

Do you remember walking through the woods and finding thumbnail-sized toads hopping in the gravel and dirt? Little, dry, bumpy-skinned creatures. How can something be so small?

Do you remember foxes? Do you remember how bright foxes are, like a flash in a far off field?

Today I got rained on. I forgot how alive you feel when out of nowhere it just starts POURING rain. Nature hides in the background a lot of the time, and then suddenly it is so powerful and all around you that it feels like everything. You feel like an idiot for forgetting it at all.

The Chathrand is an ancient ship made from enormous extinct trees. The craftsmanship and resources no longer exist to build ships like it. It is such a well conceived and lived-in setting for one of my favourite fantasy series:
