January 4, 2026 Hooverville Ursula Carroll There is a little pile of dust in the middle of my street who whispers everyone’s name morning noon and nite and this little pile of dust doesn’t ask for much maybe a cigarette or a cup of coffee every now and then and this little pile of dust gets bigger and gets smaller depending on the weather and when it is summer it is as big as it gets and this little pile of dust will tell you good advice the kind that pisses you off and this little pile of dust seems to know an awful lot and it is about to rain so one neighbor comes out and puts a traffic cone over it to keep it safe

January 1, 2026 My therapist asks me what gives me hope this week Bre D'Alessio South I tell her about the widow behind my house. How she died three months after her husband passed. The last time I saw her she handed me a basket of cucumbers severed from her garden. Pressed on tip toes she lifted them over a shared fence line. Her eyes that permanent crinkle old people get from years of laughing at the same shared joke. I told her I would return the basket but she patted my hand and waved me off.

What if all of our doomscrolling was narrated by Werner Herzog? You hold death in your hands, the insistence of vapidity, the suburban wreckage of your brain shines brightly across the couch, your nerves splay then reduce to the involuntary scroll of your thumb. Here is a forest fire, an orangutan hopping up and down at the sight of a pretty girl on the other side of the glass. Here a child’s hand emerges from under rubble. In your surrender, you are unable to reach out so you keep scrolling. Now a farmer holds out a PVC pipe and a snake slides willingly into its capture. Now the rescued sheep trips head first back into a ditch. A stray dog breaking into a Dollar General multiple times to steal a pink stuffed animal is mistaken for love. You share the story with your wife who sits only five feet away. You forget the indifference of pixels, that the dog whose tongue lolls over the unicorn’s horn was already cruelly abandoned or perhaps running from what would subjugate him.

New Reality In this one I learn to ride a bike and am beautiful the way a woman on a bike is beautiful. The wind is tepid and the leak is fixed and that one friend isn’t dead. Even the old woman who waits for the bus is right: I have the face of a teacher. I’d abandoned that desire the way a bird pushes a runt from the nest. I should have kissed her. In this one gold trees poke holes in the sky. Buildings stop burning. I write a book about the bird which drops dead without a father, then comes back to life. I can lap the sea on my bike. Even the shadows are warm.

I Saw Awesome In My Dream Timothy C Goodwin My boss stood in the doorway to my office with his hand tight around the doorknob and asked what I was doing kneeling on the floor behind my desk and because my boss was always uptight no matter what anyone told him I always told him the truth so I said I saw my old dog Awesome in a dream last night so I thought I would take a mental health break to pet him and soon enough my boss was next to me behind my desk watching quietly as I told him Awesome was panting happily because he had just finished some zoomies through the break room and his tail and tongue were wagging happily because I gave him a special treat I had been saving just for him and soon enough my boss unset his jaw and asked if he could pet Awesome too and soon enough my boss was sitting in my chair telling me Awesome was curled in his lap asking if my boss’ old cat was available to play and soon enough Awesome and Pancake were chasing each other around my office...

One time I lost sorrow; it slipped out and was buried under sand. Finely ground shells and bits of fur. One time my ancestors came walking out of the sea. They collected the bits of rock and bone and feather and fur and fashioned me. Now I fly with open mouth, trailing words and shouting meaning: “Look at what I lost.” Another swoop, closer to the ground now: “Look at what I found.” Now tusks curl from my mouth. I charge at memory, tossing aside its fragile weight that once pined me hollow. Now I am the one who will turn and return, slipping gently into water.
