Magic: the Gathering, Software, Science, I'm so tired.
"We are thinking about considering creating concepts of a plan to improve the ban schedule, a problem which has been a known pain point since at least June 2024. Pwease bear with us."

Its 2024; there's a card printed that's too hard to interact with profitably in standard, it must be banned!

Witch King by Martha Wells

Technically this is a re-read in preparation for the sequel, which comes out in October, but it's my list and I can do what I want.

I *love* this book. It's my favorite book written by Martha Wells. Her Murderbot series justifiably takes a lot of the spotlight...

But if you close your eyyyyyyyyyyes
Does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost seem like you've been here before?

It's a good sign for format health when judges are handing out play aids for convoluted combo turns right?

Is standard flourishing Wizards? Asking for all of us that have to play an RC season before the next ban windows.

Translation State by Ann Leckie 👍

I really enjoyed the Imperial Raadch Trilogy and this book continued to impress me. In comparison to the Trilogy it's less epic in scope and not a military sci fi novel, but those changes work really well for the book.

The book essentially tells the story of three

Oh, they're just not testing cards in standard at all.

I'm so glad I get to live in the era of magic where we can go from "standard is flourishing" to "oh fuck ban seven cards" in three months. Five of those cards were from the top decks when "standard was flourishing" too. I wonder if that should tell us anything... 🤔🤔🤔

Come on people, what are we doing here?
June 30, 2025 at 4:40 PM
What an extremely balanced and normal top 8 metagame. I look forward to a "No changes in all formats" ban announcement on June 30th.

Congratulations to Wizards Play Design for really pushing boundaries in awful one deck formats.

I can't understand how this happened. I was told that standard was flourishing, with a rich and diverse metagame. Certainly there were no warning signs that Wizards failed to act upon in earlier ban announcements.

Rest in peace Pioneer, 2019-2024

You were an adequate competitive format.

I took Domain to an LCQ for Montreal.

2-1 vs Sultai Soul Cauldron
2-0 vs Mono Red
2-1 vs Dimir Mid (scooped to homie)
2-0 vs Mono Black Mid (scooped to homie)
2-1 vs Dimir Terror

0-2 vs Abzan Pixie in the quarters

I'm locked on like 73/75 cards in this list for Montreal.

Many Magic: the Gathering players ask the question, are they even testing the cards they put into standard anymore?
