That's such a genuine and interesting question!
Following the "translate as it is said" rule, I wouldn't just point at the person/place referent, but rather by pointing, mouthing the said gender and do a facial expression corresponding to the intention (said on purpose or not)

On dirait pas comme ça mais je suis pas mal attristé (pour pas grand chose, certes), j'avais une lueur d'espoir après des années de solitude romantique, et les efforts que j'ai fournis n'ayant pas abouti (pas grave et normal of course) me dépriment plus qu'autre chose 😅 Même si je sais que ça ira
