This is from The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson aired on May 20th, 1977.

Carl Sagan says something very important, a strong message that didn't lose any validity since then.

Are you a woman who changed your name when you got married?

Congress is considering a bill that could make it much harder for you to vote.

Call your rep—this is not a drill. indivisible.org/resource/cal...

What would it take for us to step back from the brink of losing a functional democracy?

One step is court orders. Today, a small piece of good news for NIH.

Another step is large-scale protest.

Today I describe how these two components fit together: samwang.substack.com/p/for-us-sci...
For U.S. science, a small step back from the brink
And an evidence-based path for you to help on Friday.

@jcvi.org just announced their support for all employees who want to attend the #standupforscience2025 rallies on Friday. With so many institutions staying silent, this makes me feel proud to work here! Our team will be showing up on both coasts!

Exactly. And I worked really hard and already had a number of “something else” jobs that I didn’t like in order to get myself here.

Was just talking to my mom about fears I will lose my job soon, and she sweetly said “you are smart and capable you’ll have no problem doing something else”… and I tried to explain that I know I CAN do something else but I WANT to do science, and that’s what’s so heartbreaking…

Was just listening to the audiobook of Parable of the Talents while working in the lab and this passage really hit me

Organize your own! Book a room, order some food, and send some emails to your favorite science people to get calling.

Really missing the precedented times after the last inauguration when the spiciest news headline was about who Joe Biden’s dog bit.

@aoc.bsky.social ‘s discussion of things going on and guidance on how we can respond actually eased my anxieties a bit in that it made all the madness feel a little clearer and the opposing response a little more strategic.

Ready to be “sand in the gears” in whatever small ways that I can.

Thank you, I’ll have plenty! I used to crochet a long time ago and just started knitting a few weeks ago.

It’s been a great way to stop doomscrolling and reflect 😌

I’ve finished a Sophie scarf and have started a sweater. (I’m waiting for more purple yarn & am casting on a new cardigan as I wait 🫣)
The start of a knitted purple sweater, still on knitting needles. The neck and shoulders are finished but it is missing the sleeves and body. The sweater and knitting needles are laying on a desk.

It’s trying times like these when the office Puzzle Table feels the most necessary…
