I’m an only child and became one of four kids when I my dad remarried when I was about twelve. I learned fast to fold in extra hours of travel time before and after I need to be with people: getting off trains and buses a couple stops early to walk, no-highways driving routes. Much padding. Always.

I teach writing to kids who speak a different language and the defeated looks on their faces when their writing doesn’t match their thinking. But the elation when it starts to come together? Whew…it’s like a drug.
