It’s in lattes, ice cream and even shampoo — and now, suddenly, it’s difficult to find.

Matcha is in high demand right now, due in part to social media and tourism, causing shortages and price hikes.

Surprisingly farmers increased the matcha available by 15% since last year, but all at the cost of other teas.

While articles concerned about matcha shortages fill the foreign press, there's a growing concern at home that producers of non-matcha teas will soon begin to suffer.

Fortunately for us 'Chikiri-ya' (六角ちきりや), the store that provides our matcha, only does business domestically and is mostly unaffected by overseas demand.

Even so, the thirst for matcha has increased 20% over the last few year within Japan (influenced by inbound tourism).

So is there a concern in the tea ceremony world about matcha shortages?

At the moment not so much. Matcha has many different grades, and the highest quality (used for tea ceremonies) is generally not the matcha being bought in vast quantities for use outside of Japan✈️👋

All this focus on matcha has created an interesting side effect...the price of matcha rose 20% in the last 3 years, but the price of other green teas went up by 30%.

The sudden scramble to produce matcha has left other types of tea also in unexpectedly short supply!

Casey Means, current Surgeon General nominee, called it a “crime” to prevent hepatitis, cirrhosis, & liver cancer in babies.

I think the crime is letting her & RFK Jr DELIBERATELY endanger vulnerable people.

“mom tested negative” not a justification to forgo newborn vaccination.

BECAUSE:

Hepatitis B virus has a 10-week window period: you can be infected & infect others but NOT test positive.

That includes pregnant women and anyone else who might interact with an infant.

Children are infected 2 main ways: perinatally (at or near birth) & from close contact (family member, nursing staff).

HBV infection during the first year of life causes chronic hepatitis in 90% of cases.

Chronic hepatitis causes cirrhosis, organ failure, cancer, & death.

Why do we have universal newborn hepatitis B vaccine recommendations?

Because it saves lives.

Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) is NOT just sexually transmitted. It spreads through close contact with a variety of bodily fluids.
