parasympathetic i–iv

a body as cage, aquarium, engine.

breath trapped between effort and pause,
the engine always running beneath.

cage
 thin glass lungs full of shadows.

salt cough splintering air.

outside the wind calls low, soft as paper
tearing.

my ribs hum. the cage listens.

one day it will forget to lock.

lungs (as aquarium)
 my chest is a glass tank watered with unfiltered air.

fish of breath dart between
the bones silver, always almost dying.

the cough is a hand reaching in, rearranging the furniture.

I sleep with a birdcage over my face.

I wake to find the bars bending as if the air itself has learned my shape.

parasympathetic

the door between now and rest does not open.
 signal slowed,
a nerve waits under water

while outside, light shifts without asking

and the ribs keep still.

anxiety / second skin

an edge of heat presses close.

hot fires lick the ribs without burning.

breath coils inside me, a silent engine.

outside, the world moves as if I am not aflame.
