Why is beehiv superior? I’ve been considering publishing some writing and have no idea where’s good.

Jane Goodall’s died. Her books were part of what got me into biology. Sad to lose such a powerful voice especially considering the rate of destruction of ecosystems she fought to protect.

Yes, they should be told, but if you don’t know who it is, start with the present editor who can clarify with the authors. Hopefully there’s some sort of error (data was meant to be released and wasn’t),

In first instance, contact the editor of the paper you are reviewing. They should be able to raise this with the authors. Depending on their response, and whether the previous article was published with the same journal, go from there.

I first learned about Huntington’s in the earlyish 2000s. My dad was reading Genome and told me about it. It’s one of the reasons I became interested in genetics. In my lifetime, we’ve gone from discovering its genetic basis to treating it with gene therapy.
It’s magical. Science opens doors.

🚨 Exciting new crab preprint! A Japanese team found that sideways walking only evolved once! Maybe carcinization itself is necessary but not sufficient to go sideways?

When it's lost, the species that go forward have alternate anti predation behaviors. 🧪🦑🦀

Evolution of sideways locomotion in crabs
The evolutionary change in the mode of locomotion is often a major evolutionary event, triggering diversification. Sideways locomotion is a defining feature of true crabs (Brachyura) and may have cont...

This is a really cool thread of cool pictures and cool scientists!

If you’re a climate/energy person, I will take your portrait pro bono.

After far too many years, I've got myself a new Guardian byline pic, very kindly taken pro bono by Nick Bowring. It was getting like The Picture of Dorian Gray in reverse.
Embrace the ravages of time!

It's 2025, and there are still people that haven't accepted the fact that there is no path out of this mess that doesn't involve:

1) People that aren't Black...

2) Advocating for, and fighting for...

3) People that are Black.

None.

Yes, I've praised some of Einstein's views, and been critical of some of his views. That's not contradictory at all. That's how it's supposed to work.

I'm not saying Einstein never had a bad take.

I'm saying that Einstein recognized that "Science is neutral! It doesn't have politics!"🤡 is silly.

They’re really cool! Are these ones you have? A great library, may start adding to my reading list.

@benaaronovitch.bsky.social have you always shared book covers with your word count?
helenapvalle.bsky.social
Wait, your animals can’t work either? I didn’t realise this.
Best of luck to you and your border collie (pics? I do love a collie).

@badlawyerpod.bsky.social I only started listening recently and getting to relive the Eras with y’all is giving me life.

This is honestly the most ridiculous situation, I’m really sorry.

Could you get someone who’s travelling back for Xmas to take things with them and post them when they get there?

Crick(et) found a stick this morning. The stick was Too Big. He didn’t want help carrying it. The stick did not make it home (for once).
Crick(et), a tricolour smooth collie, wearing a red harness and carrying a big stick. The stick is not quite so big he can’t carry it, but it is big enough to look ridiculous. Crick(et)’s tail is standing at a weird angle (kinda looks like a lightning bolt?) and one of his ears is more folded than the other. As a photogenic dog, he knows to stare right at the camera.

Anyways, life goes on, we’re getting new music on October third, and I’m looking forward to a very basic girl autumn.

I also caved and read TK’s Wikipedia page finally. I have no interest in American Football or him, really, but the meathead discourse was getting to me. All I can say is that reading the Wikipedia page didn’t do much for my belief that he’s actually pretending to be less smart than he is.

I am, however, loving the Swiftie/parasocial reaction to the engagement, but still nowhere near as much as I’m enjoying the reaction to the podcast album release announcement and the Easter Egg hunting going on. My respect for the detective Swifties remains intact.
helenapvalle.bsky.social
There’s obviously been a lot of TS news lately: I’m a bit shocked that she’d announce an album and immediately after (or so it feels), announce an engagement! Still unsurprising that the most liked IG post by a woman ever is a post shared with a man, about her marrying a man…

Crick(et) Our Love is God, Keeper of the Stairs, Finder of the Sticks, Lord Barker at Open Windows.
Crick(et), a seven month old tricolour smooth collie, looking down at me from the top of the stairs. He’s been barking at the window (someone drove past) and he’s clearly wondering why I’m trying to interrupt this Extremely Important Job.

to use tailors. They simply weren’t as expensive as they are today and adjusting clothes was expected.
