We have an AOI (Area of Interest) marked in the Western Caribbean, south of Cuba. Basically where Rafael formed.

40% chance of formation into a Tropical Cyclone as of a few hours ago.

Looks like #HurricaneRafael is finally beginning to weaken. The IR presentation is not as impressive and thankfully, the track is still nowhere near land before dissipation.

Hurricane Rafael's eye has reopened. Absolutely amazing. Should start weakening soon either way; Recon Aircraft on their way to investigate.

NHC wants sharp southern turn towards 4-5 days out for Rafael. Currently, the models are split between a south and a north turn. We will see what happens.

Nice turn to the west by Rafael now as we head into the afternoon (EDT), a welcome motion based on the north-northwest motion predicted when he first formed.

Recon finds a maintaining Hurricane Rafael this morning. A sharp turn left should happen; after that the track spread is huge so... We'll just have to see where the current takes him.

Nutty dropsonde on Rafael's Northeastern Eyewall as he exits Cuba and enters the Gulf.

I have to assume he only has so much time until that November gulf shear hits him and prevents further strengthening. We'll see.

I've been tracking Hurricane Raphael as it affects Cuba, as I do with other tropical cyclones. Anybody else notice the backloaded season and how the model signals seemingly go on into next week?
