I was watching a TV show (scripted, so fiction!) about an emergency room and you see the staff casually get hand sanitizer from wall-mounted dispensers to clean their hands between patients and I remember thinking: OK, but if someone comes in with undiagnosed norovirus …

Soap & water is best for hand washing.

Alcohol-based sanitizers don't work on non-enveloped viruses.

But soap forms micelles to trap viruses so they can be rinsed away.
