Jaded cynical post-atheist interested in Miami electrobass, evolution, immunology, philosophy, most metal, reading books, Frankfurt critical theory, football, and F1.
Pinecreek Doug, who took to labeling himself SE Limbaugh after I made a joke about similarity is one of the several reasons I quit the SE Discord servers. Toxic stuff!

Also there’s the repugnant James Lindsay aspect to Boghossian and his ilk and the buy-in to long running mischaracterizations of critical theory.

Not that critical rationalism is wrong, but seems misplaced when engaging everyday people about how they came to believe stuff and what confidence they have in those beliefs.

To me the informality was an appeal alongside the conversational approach. On an SE server I saw informality trashed by engaging some guy named Brett Hall who is a Popperish acolyte of David Deutsch. They were working to incorporate critical rationalism (ie- jumping the shark). Pure scientism.

Though I mostly know of it via Adam Grant’s portrayal in Think Again, motivational interviewing seems better IMO.
January 10, 2026 at 1:18 PM
It was a subtle deconversion effort with a covert atheist agenda, but I don’t think some of its sincerest adherents are trolling. Boghossian and his lapdog Nicewonder are. Others thought it was a nicer less confrontational method than that of the debate me bros. I think it too flawed by its origins.

I thought the stuff on certainty and closure ok with early SE. My main problem has been Boghossian with his anti-woke pose becoming a magnet for toxic people. SE has become the unlikeliest cult in history, borrowing from 🤢🤮 Shermer.

Yes humility can go too far, but Boghossian isn’t guilty of it.

I’d rather gargle thumbtacks than attend anything including Jon Haidt. Seriously? Will Bill Maher do opening monologue?
January 10, 2026 at 9:53 AM
My question exactly. Haidt is toxic.

Also on Roku now.

It’s on Roku

There’s quite a bit more to be concerned with in the new dietary guidelines overall: it’s drastic reduction in depth and shifting toward whole milk, butter, and tallow. I don’t quite see bozo Oz recommending people get hammered on shots of whiskey often and drive drunk.
January 7, 2026 at 9:18 PM
Booze is surely more fun. I think the recent dustup was over some ridiculous stretch connecting acetaminophen to autism by the usual suspects: www.fda.gov/news-events/...

The teetotaling temperance society has come to town.

Out of curiosity how many people posting on this thread will go on to drink some alcohol in the not too distant future?
January 7, 2026 at 6:23 PM
Some of the new recommendations are good like avoiding added sugars “Avoid sugar-sweetened beverages, such as sodas, fruit drinks, and energy drinks.”

I just can’t get past “…prioritize oils with essential fatty acids, such as olive oil. Other options can include butter or beef tallow.” though.
January 7, 2026 at 6:06 PM
The previous guidelines said “All fluid, dry, or evaporated milk, including lactose-free and lactose-reduced products and fortified soy beverages (soymilk), buttermilk, yogurt, kefir, frozen yogurt, dairy desserts, and cheeses. Most choices should be fat-free or low-fat.“
No soy milk in new version.

And the new version says “When consuming dairy, include full-fat dairy
with no added sugars. Dairy is an excellent
source of protein, healthy fats, vitamins, and
minerals.”… So full fat dairy. Also recommends tallow and butter.
January 7, 2026 at 5:39 PM
To be fair 🦆 said “I don’t think you should drink alcohol.” The new guidelines say “Consume less alcohol for better overall health.” instead of guidelines on how much per day. The part that gets me is that the resource has gone from 164 pages to 10.

Best to just steer clear and learn your Socratic method elsewhere.
December 30, 2025 at 2:44 AM
One of the servers has been taken over by a self-styled Limbaugh type. The superficial politeness of SE makes it a powerless victim to such asymmetry. Plus Boghossian and Nicewonder converting it at its core into anti-woke BS crap that’s James Lindsay adjacent. Hard to warn unwitting atheists…
