Pixel fidelity was all over the place in the PS1 days, you gotta do lower density for background, unimportant, distant stuff so that 1 MB of RAM won't run out quicker than you can say Crash Bandicoot.
A lot of games also did polygons without shaders or even rendereded them solid.

Pixel fidelity was all over the place in the PS1 days, you gotta do lower density for background, unimportant, distant stuff so that 1 MB of RAM won't run out quicker than you can say Crash Bandicoot.
