DOE also provides important data on school systems that isn’t available elsewhere. Importantly, the DOE Office of Civil Rights is a critical watchdog on discrimination in ed policies. If that oversight is left to the states, we’ll end up with basically educational apartheid.
The main beneficiaries of the Department of Education are disabled kids (IDEA) and working-class and poor Americans (Title I, Pell Grants, work assistance), so of course Trump wants to do away with it.
