From the Keep at Dolwyddelan #castle you can see a tree covered mound on the other side of the road, once the site of Castell Tomen, said to be the birthplace of Llywelyn ap Iowerth.

After Castell Dolwyddelan was built in the C12th Castell Tomen was left to ruin.

The Mortuary at Picton Castle

During WWII, Picton Castle was used as a hospital. One room (originally a butcher’s shop) was converted into a mortuary, and the original slab used for the deceased still stands in the centre today.

Picton #Castle was built by Sir John Wogan around 1315. After being owned by the Dwnn family, it passed to the Philipps family in 1491 through marriage who held ownership until 1987.

Ruthin Castle

The original castle was founded by Edward l in 1277. It was attacked by Owain Glyndwr in 1400 and laid waste in 1646 after the Civil War.

The castle ruins remain around and below the modern castle built in 1826.

Penally Cross at St Nicholas and St Teilo Church, Penally

Guildford Castle - attributed to William the Conqueror, built shortly after 1066. The first #castle would have been a wooden tower built on top of a motte surrounded by a ditch and a bailey. The early timber buildings were replaced with stone during the C12th.

Scot’s #Church now Cobh #Museum

The church was built in 1854 for the British servicemen in Cobh. Following its closure in 1969 it was donated to Cork County Council. In 1973 it opened as a museum and features Cobh's military and maritime history.

Clava Cairns, Balnuaran of Clava are around 4,000 years old. They were built to house the dead. The site dates to the Bronze Age but Neolithic flints found during excavations indicate the area was being used well before building of the cairns.
