🔄 These biotech tools aren’t new to biology, but they’re largely untested in real‑world conservation. We call for transparent risk assessments, public engagement & small‑scale pilots before any rollout.

📝 Editing should be a last resort only in particular cases, e.g., species of genetically depleted species without wild sources of rescue.
🚨 Genome engineering is a “second‑aid” tool and should always be used along with established conservation actions

Interspecies hybridization could introduce vital genetic diversity. Alternatively, gene editing may allow the reintroduction of lost immune gene variants. This might be needed because once lost, genetic diversity is very difficult to recover

In just two centuries, the orange-bellied parrot has lost a staggering 62% of its genetic diversity. This decline threatens its adaptive potential and resilience, making it highly vulnerable to disease outbreaks like avian flu and PBFD 🦠

The orange-bellied parrot is predicted to go extinct by 2038. We tracked >200 years of genomic erosion. Here’s what we found 🧬🦜 #ConservationGenomics #consgen #popgen

We show how genetic risks in endangered species can stay hidden due to a time-lag between demographic collapse and genetic loss. Work led by amazing MSc students Xufen Liu and Ester Milesi #ConservationGenomics
