Interspecies hybridization could introduce vital genetic diversity. Alternatively, gene editing may allow the reintroduction of lost immune gene variants. This might be needed because once lost, genetic diversity is very difficult to recover

In just two centuries, the orange-bellied parrot has lost a staggering 62% of its genetic diversity. This decline threatens its adaptive potential and resilience, making it highly vulnerable to disease outbreaks like avian flu and PBFD 🦠
