Do they need to? By subterfuge (with varying degrees of subtlety) both the USA and Russia have been working, successfully, to destabilise European countries, whether ostensibly allies or not, promoting each other’s cleptocratic oligarchies.

Huston, we have a problem. At the governmental level there is no alternative to having to deal with Trump, indeed any leader. At the practical level there is so much interdependence (lopsided, admittedly) especially on defence and intelligence, that professionals just have to keep getting on.

There has long been a knowledge gap (and why wouldn't there be, it's complex stuff, both legally and technically) between senior managers and policy makers on the one hand and ICT professionals on the other. Inevitably the tension between the two is "resolved" on the basis of cost, not data security

Naturally there's s no clue, no detail; the objective if to keep stirring the pot of hatred and remain front and centre of the news agenda, always crossing the newsworthiness threshold. Nastiness from the racist in the corner of the pub that would once have been called out now drowns out all else.

My father was in the army in WW2, it affected his views on human rights, international law and justice and the European project and that of course influenced me. As new generations come along the distance from history's lessons widens - the door to xenophobia, nationalism and racism easier to open.
