From what I'm seeing the appeal of Matrix and its clients is supposed to be that all the severs are individually hosted, which makes it a lot harder to regulate in any official capacity. Kinda like Irc in that regard. But I also imagine that sort of limits its uses for a lot of people.

It's the difference between having inpiration you can draw from to flavor a campaign setting, and letting a glossary of "canonical" trivia actively restrict your vision for what can happen.

I've always enjoyed the *option* of reading into a detailed setting, but only when the expectations for player-facing information don't become a homework assignment.
