talk to me about jayvik situationship ★ 🔞 ★ she/her ★ latina
I won't talk about who gets to call themselves latino or not, I know the term is broad, from the people living in latin america to the demographic denomination the US uses for the immigrants and their descendants.
Just know that the week wasn't a time for exclusion, for many it was a safe space.

In the end, latinos born and raised in LATAM know the hardships people go through to live the American dream, we have parents, aunts and uncles, or family alike who had tried it and are now living abroad. We aren't anti-migrant, at all.

It saddens me you felt the week was a hostile environment for you, but it also worries me that there's a belief that the week was done to exclude migrants when I don't think that was the intended message the people in charge wanted to make.

I understand how isolation for speaking your mother tongue would keep you from teaching it to your kids, you want more opportunities for them. And this also shows how the world and, of course, the US was very english-centered and still is to this day, rejecting any other language.

I also offered myself for translating fanfiction if they wanted their work in the collection, and there were some collaborations between latino people and non-latinos who wanted to support the fanweek. No exclusion. Just an unfortunate misinterpretation of the very clear guidelines.

"no one deserves to be excluded for their ethnicity" and no one was. people were butthurt over their fics not being in a collection on an already English centered site. Why is it so hard to understand that maybe an archive for non-english latino jayvik fics would be a cool thing to have?

If you wanted to actually gather information, you could have checked the guidelines and the posts where the mods repeatedly assured that every work and fanart was welcome and that the limiting aspect would be for AO3, a platform that most of us, non-english natives, contribute to in English.

Speaking over Latino voices is not the way to approach this debate. Silencing us is not the way to do it either, especially if you are open to "be educated" about it. Especially if you're going to spread lies about us.

Not including English works in a collection in no way is a form of oppression. I cannot believe I have to write this. And, in no way Latin Americans believe migrants do not share our culture. They know it, after all, since they lived here before migrating.

Treating us like "Spanish" is a colonizer language so why would it be tied to our culture when the Spanish we speak borrows terms from our ancestral languages, mirrors our beliefs, and our traditions. This happens with languages that are spoken in Latin America.

And it's CRAZY that people are using these very terrible and serious issues to protest a collection of works written in our mother tongues in an archive where 95% of the works are in English. What the fuck.

Every once in a while the local news talk about lives lost in the jungle. Since the current administration in the US started, not only did we have our people in shackles sent to our countries like fucking criminals, but we're seeing ADS from the US gov telling us to NOT GO THERE.

We have grandparents who are living abroad because of an economic crisis, we have uncles working their asses off to either send some money or take the kids with them, we even know people who have been detained or lost their lives crossing the Darién. Do you really think WE would be anti-migrants?

y bueno qué hacemos hablando en inglés nosotros ajdbsksj pero sí, yo no lo pude evitar y obvio me dejó una sensación terrible porque el timing fue MUY sospechoso y luego al mismo tiempo la week contestó esa straw y estalló todo

dare I say... one of the people who started this whole thing over here wasn't even latino and I am *not* talking about the people from PR...

"get deported" bro I'm not on American soil, do you think everyone who speaks your language is living in the US? gtfo
August 11, 2025 at 8:17 PM
Latinos who are fluent in English can still participate, though. No one is excluding anyone from it, I think the collection rule is trying to promote people writing in languages besides English, which is the one most of us use so we can reach more people. A way to reclaim our own tongues.
August 11, 2025 at 3:39 PM
I don't think a restriction on being part of the collection is limiting people from participating, I am a spanish speaker first, but I would love to read english fics for latinojayvikweek as well as many others! Please, don't feel discouraged from contributing to the week 🙏

Latinos who live outside the US are well aware of the situation happening over there, we have family and friends suffering the consequences, and our countries have received our migrants with open arms. Please, don't believe for a second we don't consider this a major problem for us all 🙏
August 11, 2025 at 3:29 PM
Hi, I'm not one of the mods but the rules say people can participate with English works, that is 100% allowed. I don't think the restriction in the collection means anything else besides letting latinamericans write in their first language.
