The slight issue is the length of “NEWCASTLE UNITED” – it is forced into being quite small, even if you use a narrow or condensed font. So I looked at getting rid of the ribbon. 😬 The result is something like these options, which I think are working pretty well.

Looking at the colour version, I think being restrained and allowing the monochrome of our identity to take a front seat, with some nice blue/gold accents makes a lot of sense. So where does that leave us? Well something like this...
