On September 14, 1862, British merchants encountered a Satsuma domain procession near Yokohama. When they failed to yield, samurai attacked, killing Charles Lennox Richardson. The Namamugi Incident led to severe diplomatic tensions and triggered the Anglo-Satsuma War in 1863.
