I really hope this gets rectified as well. I was in the process of doing some research for a university project and information I was using literally disappeared overnight. Luckily for me *some* (but not all) of the articles were available through other databases on the university library website.

Yeah that was my bad on poorly wording my argument. You would be absolutely correct.

That’s another aspect which would be good to explore in a course. North America has a growing number of refugees and immigrants and understanding their cultures and beliefs would be really beneficial. Again, the school shouldn’t be telling you what to believe in, but I think should explain them.

I do agree that what the United States is/has been trying to implement is inherently wrong by pushing Christianity out there. This is my vision of a reform that will likely never happen unless we as humans can learn to respect others and treat everyone like humans.

I think if we learn about others beliefs and the history behind them we can become more tolerant of everyone. Lots of bias and assumptions get made purely from a lack of education. Again, shouldn’t just be pushing one religion, and also shouldn’t be a “you must pick one”

I elaborated this in another thread on here, but basically the idea was an optional elective that explained different religions values (Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, etc) and also explored religious conflicts. Ideally a course built to understand others.

It’s the same situation where I’m from. The cons could run anyone and they would get votes, yet they still find a public figure, lib and NDP, nope.
December 2, 2024 at 1:42 PM
I honestly don’t know who to vote for in the next election. PP is NOT an option in my opinion, but I think JT needs to step down (unsure atm if he will) if the liberals have any shot to get in. And voting NDP in my riding is a joke because they rarely put thought into their MP candidates in my area.

Ugh. I wish we could stop that man. Glad I’m in Canada, though it’s only getting worse here.
December 2, 2024 at 4:45 AM
Yeah. I just feel like so many people are under educated about other beliefs outside their own, and if public schools taught it, people may be more willing to listen to other voices. Learning to understand others is such a useful life skill imo.

Ran out of words but individuals like myself struggled to fill their elective courses because not a lot of options outside of science were available. I’d have loved to have had more options in social sciences and studies of (objective) religion/history that were just not available to me.

Not sure how it works where you’re from, but my high school had up to 24 credits you could take through high school (8 a year) with 18 minimum to graduate. That left us with 6 electives. While those in the STEM route filled all 24 with chem, physics, and bio (both in gr. 11 & 12) not everyone did.

I’m envisioning each unit taught like a history course. Outline different religions belief systems, where they stemmed from, and explore religious conflicts in history and why. Get people at a high school level understanding more about other cultures is the end goal for me.

I think we are on different wavelengths because I do not believe that public school should be privatized. I think that public schools should provide more courses as an optional elective. Like intro to intro uni courses. And I think that post secondary should be gov funded like Europe.
December 2, 2024 at 4:20 AM
True, however I would also argue we would either need to offer funding for post secondary education to make this possible. For many, post secondary is out of the picture financially. Life skills should indeed be first to be added — my high school cut cooking/sewing class through polling students.
December 2, 2024 at 3:51 AM
That’s a good idea. I like that
December 2, 2024 at 3:47 AM
I also agree, but I feel like it could be offered as an optional course that you could take as an elective in high school. Point being not everyone has the funds to afford post secondary edu.
December 2, 2024 at 3:46 AM
Bingo. All religions should be taught at some point in a students course of education. The more we educate, the less presumptions are made of others.
December 2, 2024 at 2:37 AM
I think that this would allow us to learn about other cultures and beliefs outside of our own. I should add, to pull this off, the standard for who could teach the course would have to be high, and the course would need evals often to ensure the material is met and covered objectively.
December 2, 2024 at 2:29 AM
I’m down to teach religion in schools, just not force it. For example, offer a “Religious Studies” or “History of Religion” course and teach beliefs of all religions, and by that I mean not just Christianity. Teach Christmas, and the history of why, but also spend time covering Hanukkah, Diwali, etc

I strongly believe that we should not get rid of devices just for the sake of doing so if they are still perfectly usable.
December 1, 2024 at 3:49 AM
From what I hear they are still using it to edit the script for their school morning announcements. It runs in clamshell mode and is more than capable of running Gmail and a Google Slide document, alongside a few other required websites (weather and national day calendar).
