I found out today that a former colleague passed away some weeks ago. I had known he had been doing poorly but just learned of his passing.

Many "big name" folks get a lot of kudos when they pass, but it feels like some of the best of us do not. So, in that vein...

I am so sorry to hear that Larry Keating, Professor Emeritus of City and Regional Planning at Georgia Tech, passed away this summer. I had heard that he was doing poorly, but then hadn't heard he had passed until now. Larry and I overlapped only about one year at Georgia Tech, but I had known him and his work before that, and we occasionally chatted and met over the years.

Larry was a giant in planning in my eyes and still is. So many others get called "giants" in academia for publishing scores of articles, or hobnobbing with the elite, or scoring the latest big grant, or achieving some other kudos from the mostly powerful. But to me, Larry was a giant because for so many years he remained fully committed to using his research, teaching, and policy voice for the those most vulnerable to the mostly brutal housing markets they face in the US and, especially in Larry's case, Atlanta. Larry focused on work that *meant something* to people, to real people in Atlanta and elsewhere, who needed help and who were being hurt by things like public housing demolition, segregation, and gentrification. He was a true "advocacy planner" in the tradition of Paul Davidoff and a true "equity planner" in the tradition of Norm Krumholz and others. He stood up to, and spoke truth to, power, whether it be the Atlanta Housing Authority, the City of Atlanta, the State of Georgia, or many others. Rest in peace and power, Larry. You did well.
