Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky's Sea View (1841), Among the Waves (1898), Gibraltar by Night (1844), & North Sea Storm (1865)
'sea view' is pretty self-explanatory - a painting of the sea (probably) at dusk, the left side of the painting is dominated by dark brown cliffs with rocky outcrops staggered around the center of the painting, with the sun above them in a dark sky with pale clouds. there is a boat in the foreground to the right, and a tiny white boat in the background to the far right. somehow the sun's light feels almost blinding, gives a bright green cast to the water. a painting of choppy sea waves and nothing else - the light seems to come from above the painting on the far left. the water is dark blue, nearly pitch black in the background. toward the center and foreground, the water is foamy, in shades from a bright aqua green to cornflower blue. painting is about half sky and half sea - there's a bright full moon in the sky, partly obscured by a haze of pinky gray clouds. the moon is slightly off center, hanging above the silhouette of the Rock of Gibraltar. in the foreground on the right is the dark shape of what looks like a sinking ship spitting red sparks, there are two ships behind it heading toward the rock. the sea appears almost gold at its center, with choppy, swooping waves behind it that appear opalescent, containing colors ranging from pale blue to lilac. a tempest at sea - there's a ship in the distance, slightly off-center, and tilting over to the left. there's a full moon in the sky above almost completely concealed by gauzy blue-gray clouds. in the bottom left corner of the painting, there is a boat with sailors who look like they're reaching out toward the ship. the moon creates a column of light illuminating the top of the choppy, dark blue-green sea all the way to the bottom of the painting.
