Science-backed resilience in action.
As #LCAW2025 focuses on turning climate science into real-world impact, Highlands Rewilding is demonstrating how nature restoration can be measured, valued, and made investable using rigorous ecological baselining to monitor biodiversity, carbon, and soil health.

Loch Ness hydropower project ‘gives renewable energy a bad name’
We have raised serious concerns about the impact of Loch Ness becoming artificially tidal. Watch our short video from Co-chief Scientist Dr Penelope Whitehorn, which goes into more detail. #lochness #renewableenergy #glenearrach

We believe that the Glen Earrach hydro development’s inadequate surveys have failed to capture the true and potentially devastating ecological impact to one of Scotland’s most iconic habitats.

Highlands Rewilding have recently formally objected to the #Glenearrach hydro scheme. Along with 4 other consented schemes, this makes #lochness effectively tidal with regular fluctuations of over half a metre, & could cause significant biodiversity loss.

Yesterday we joined over 100 campaigners and members of @the Scottish rewilding alliance outside Holyrood to send a clear message to the @Scottish Government: stop stalling, start rewilding.

The objection highlights under-sampling in the developer’s surveys, evidence from eDNA of wider invertebrate communities, and potential impacts on blanket bog, ancient woodland and Loch nam Breac Dearga. Click here to find out more: static1.squarespace.com/static/621f9...

Highlands Rewilding has lodged a formal objection to the proposed Glen Earrach pumped-storage hydro scheme at Loch Ness. The filing warns the project could render the loch effectively “quasi-tidal”, with regular water-level swings and associated risks to biodiversity and protected habitats.

Can sheep help our trees grow? 🐑🌱
Ranger Daniel Holm tried a simple idea: wrapping saplings with locally sourced sheep fleece to deter deer. Co-chief scientist Penelope Whitehorn has launched a follow-up experiment: spraying saplings with lanolin, the natural wax found in wool. #NatureBasedSolutions

Exciting update!
Were you one of the many people disappointed not to be able to invest under £50K during this new round of fundraising? Well, we’ve listened to you, and this week we are delighted to share that we are collaborating with Green Angel Ventures, to enable investments from as low as £5K.

Beautiful animals, difficult choices.
At Tayvallich Estate (as in Bunloit), many trees show signs of deer damage. Bark stripped, saplings grazed.
Without predators, deer populations have grown far beyond balance.
Listen to Estate Manager Ewan Paterson’s view on these animals.

Dung Lab
We now test dung for parasites in-farm. With training from Pasture for Life and using simple lab equipment, Farm Manager Erik Riddell now medicates animals only when needed.
Reducing chemical use on sheep and cattle, for healthier livestock, soils and invertebrates, at lower costs

Huge thanks to entomologist, Neil Ravenscroft and all our eager attendees, some of whom were keen to get home to see if they could spot these rare webs in their own gardens and around!

The Marsh Fritillary Butterfly is threatened in the UK and across Europe.

But we still find them on Tayvallich estate – as the group of attendees on our Marsh Fritillary Web Count confirmed last Saturday, when they found 40 webs, spun by larvae.

A recent Wildlife Walk with the Farm Advisory Service showed how GPS-collared cattle, native woodland, and careful grazing management are shaping a landscape where nature and farming thrive together.

Whoops. We got this one wrong.

Our headline: “Pine martens eat squirrels – but not red ones – though they’d like to”, was… not true. Pine martens are not picky diners, and yes, they will occasionally snack on red squirrels. Sorry, reds.

We at the media team should have checked with out experts.

Imagine the future of Tayvallich

For centuries this land has been deforested. But just across the water lies Taynish National Nature Reserve – a living reminder of what once was, and what can return.
Woodland coming back,
Wildlife thriving
Carbon stored,
Communities supported

Pine martens eat squirrels – but not red ones. We want to share this fact, (and this film) again for #nationalpinemartenday. So why are #pinemartens not a threat to our native red squirrels? Find out more in this film narrated by ranger Louise McLaren. #redsquirrels #rewilding #nature

Three volunteer groups are now surveying our old ruins this weekend - which the Barrahormid Trust hopes to restore as future homes. The data will help us understand which #bat species are roosting there.

🦇 How to detect and survey bats
Last week we hosted a brilliant bat training evening at Tayvallich led by Ross Preston and Jani from Rowan Ecology. Over 20 locals learned to use thermal cameras, audio sensors and specialist equipment to spot bats emerging at dusk.

What a brilliant day at the Glenurquhart Highland Games last weekend. Fantastic to see so many stop by to learn more about #rewilding at Bunloit. The 'Whose Poo?' game was particularly popular with adults and children alike!

It's encouraging to see progress on this key biodiversity target.

Ultimately, #Nature30 needs to be more than a recognition of management that contributes to nature protection; it also needs to help support meaningful change across large, new areas of land.
